Riding Convenience

A re-design of the Honda Activa cluster which is also the most commonly used scooty countrywide in India and has been the best selling from the past 4 years. This re-design enables riders to integrate their smartphone content to their scooters for a safe, distraction free and convenient ride.

The affordability factor of scooters in a country like India makes it everyone’s go to vehicle for running errands over a four-wheeled vehicle. Almost every family in India owns a scooter and is shared by all. Apart from running errands, use of scooters is widely observed for delivering food. While doing so, delivery partners face challenges while efficiently navigating and communicating with customers.

Exising Honda Active cluster

According to a research by Google Design when studying the use of Google Maps, the time people spend in traffic in Delhi, India has doubled in the last six years. Due to this two-wheelers like Bikes and scooty are becoming more popular as a means of transport. They are very efficient in terms of moving around in traffic and price as compared to cars. Honda Activa was chosen as my Case study since it’s one ofthe most popular and most selling scooters in India.

PERSONA

Food delivery partners were the main target group for this project because this is the group that is completely dependent on scooters to sustain their daily lives, earn for their families and is often left out. Solving for their needs, painpoints and frustrations would help the general population’s painpoints with scooters as well.

KEY OPPORTUNITIES

01. While riding a scooter it is difficult for the rider to use navigation tools like google maps on their smartphone. It is also not possible to integrate those tools with the information cluster since it is not digital.
02. Communicating with the customer while riding also turns out to be a great task because the rider has to have access to their phone if they want to make a call and sometimes also have difficulty while receiving a call.

03. Unlike cars there is no infotainment system like for a rider while riding a scooter. There is also no information regarding their vehicle as well as no information regarding vehicle maintenance.

WIREFRAME IDEATION

UI DESIGN IDEATION

CONCEPT

Due to feasibility issues while testing with the target user, the wireframes were tested with general users who use scooty on a daily basis. After testing out and getting feedback, a design was finalized.

CONTROLS
The screen of the scooter is always exposed hence it’s not a touch screen. The Scooter would have buton on both the sides at the handles which would help them navigate the screen. The left side would help navigate horizontally and the right side vertically using the buttons.

SECURITY

Every person who shares the scoter has their own profile which requires a PIN to login. PIN is necessary to make sure that all the information related to the rider is safe and secured.

NAVIGATION

After the rider starts the navigation in their smartphone, they would then connect then phone to the scooter via an USB and the navigation would be visible on the scooter screen.

VEHICLE INFORMATION

The scooter would also show information about rider’s license, vehicle information, etc. It would also allow users to listen to music when the smartphone is plugged in.

CALLING

The rider is also able to make calls to people on their favourites list on from the smartphone connected. Along with making calls the rider can also receive calls through the controls on the scooter.
